How to Renew Your Texas Towing License
Texas towing operator licenses must be renewed every year. Here is what TDLR requires and the order to do it in.
What you need
- 4 hours of TDLR-approved continuing education, completed during your current license term (16 TAC §86.250).
- Your TDLR license number and a TDLR online account.
- The renewal fee.
The 4 hours must include
- 1 hour of roadway safety
- 1 hour of Texas law and rules that regulate towing operators
- 2 hours of other approved topics: driver safety, towing techniques, equipment operation and safety, or customer service and documentation
Our 4-hour course covers all three parts in one enrollment.
Steps
- Complete your CE. Finish the course and print your certificate.
- Wait for reporting. We report your completion to TDLR within 7 days. TDLR needs to show your hours before you can renew.
- Renew with TDLR. Log in to your TDLR online account, submit the renewal and pay the fee.
- Keep your certificate for two years in case TDLR asks for it.
Special cases
- Late renewal: your CE hours must be completed within the one year before the date you renew. Late fees apply.
- First renewal of an incident management license: you must take an 8-hour professional development course with at least 2 hours of live or hands-on training and 2 hours of classroom training. It cannot be completed online. All later renewals use the standard 4 hours.
- Taking the same course twice: TDLR does not give credit for repeating a course, so take a different approved course next year.
